Gateway is a 2D Portal with a Metroidvania level style. However, there is no apparent villain. Your character just wakes up and his lab is in disorder. There are enemies, but these are mere annoyances and pose no real threat. As for the A/V aspect, well the pixel-art isn't so great (which you can see from the store page), and I find the music flat-out annoying (but you can mute it).The bulk of the game is using your portal gun to flip the world all around and solve room puzzles to open doors. At first, the mechanism is fun, refreshing. Even with the second portal gun type, the puzzles are interesting. One of the requirements for a successful Metroidvania game is to teach the player how to properly use their new equipment using the level design, and here Gateways fails. Once you start accumulating the portal gun types, the puzzle solutions become opaque, linear. The game developers want you to solve the level-puzzles their way, and the more complex puzzles are infuriating for their strict needs. I almost completed the game, but got stuck on one of the final puzzles and decided I could use my free time playing games with more compelling narratives and better level design.. What the heck!? This is a metroidvania with portals? What else do you need to know to go grab this NOW?!. Very nice puzzle game. The puzzles are challenging (sometimes so much that I'm really grateful to the developer for including the purchasable solutions), the controls work fine and the art stile is not bad. What I don't like about it is that it depends heavily on upgrades, a ton of the areas are locked at the beginning and can only be reached as you slowly get the various guns and upgrades that allow you to solve the puzzles that lead to those areas. I bought this game because I assumed it would have been a 2d version of portal, and at the beginning it was. But portal's low skill floor was the thing that made it such an awesome game: you had one simple tool with 2 modes and you had to master them. As you progressed through the game the levels became more and more difficult, but the tools you had stayed the same, which allowed it to be a game with huge depth with very little complexity.Something that this game is sadly not. But it's still enjoyable, for a few hours. At 0.99€ it's a no brainer.. Did you ever think to yourself "Man, Portal is too easy. I wish Valve's playtesters hadn't weeded out the 5 emancipation grid room, or thrown up when walking on the ceiling"? Well, you're in luck. This game is, from my vague knowledge of Metroid, a hybrid of Portal and Metroid. You are a scientist, stuck in his lab, with all the areas therin sealed off by devious puzzles only solvable by your gateway (Portal) devices. Yes, devices. You get the basic one early on, but then you find yourself needing to rotate gravity, and link time AND space, and make yourself small (or large, but I managed to Portal all the large situations) through the same device. As you get more unlocks, you can explore more of the map, and open up harder puzzles. This doesn't have GLaDOS, but the cruel puzzles make up for it (you can buy automated solutions for just 25 hint orbs, but generally the 5 orb "Is this possible yet?" question is more entertaining). If you want a very much easier platformer with the same time mechanics as here you can check out Shuggy by the same dev. But it is very very easy, and I'd only recommend it to kids. Seasoned platformers are going to find that the only challenge here is trying to complete two player co-op with one character on each hand.. edit: will be updating this review as I play the game again soon. an easier mode was added so I'm going to give it a goGateways starts off like 2d Portal and then advances to more with all sorts of different Portal-style guns, but for other things like time. The game starts off pretty fun.. but its difficulty curve. Ugh.This summed it up:http://i.imgur.com/Q2Fo6b4.pngIt goes from basic and fun with just enough challenge to keep it exciting.. to ♥♥♥♥ing tedious and ridiculously hard. Now, since I last played it I heard it was patched to have an easier difficulty mode.I might give it a go sometime, and if I find it much better then I'll re-post this review.Until then, I can say it was a really neat game ruined by an overly extreme difficult curve. It had a lot going for it. The visuals were cute and the music fit well. The gimmick was awesome and playing a Portal-style game in a 2d sidescrolling environment was awesome. In fact, I enjoyed the time playing this game more than the actual Portal games.Regardless of the difficulty I experienced, I think its worth giving a shot for sure.. Rating: 7\/10Gateways mixes gameplay and puzzles mechanics from various games (Portal and The Swapper for example). The gameplay elements are not innovative but well put together. Neither the puzzles, the plattforming nor the combat are very challenging if isolated, but together the elements create a metroidvanian exlporation flow. The puzzles in the late game become harder since they demand a good timing. However, Gateways fails to create a captivating \/ immersive atmosphere, due to the bland art style, annoying sound effects and bad story, what in the end prevents Gateways from becomming a great game.Pros:+ metroidvanian leveldesign (connected level\/world)+ puzzle focused (little platforming, little combat)+ different puzzle mechanics (portal\/time\/gravity\/size manipulation)+ help mechanic (buying hints or solution with collected power orbs)+ helpfull map (showing puzzles)+ fair save pointsCons:- annoying soundeffects (especially jumping)- only one enemy type (small and big)- bland art style- generic story- short (7 hours, one hour for the last puzzle). Gateways has a decent concept, sort of in the vein of those Portalesque games that followed in it's wake, but a reasonably decent game.Although, unfortunately, I wasn't able to finish the game. The puzzle design has some of the most difficult puzzles in the game being mandatory to complete, which wouldn't be a problem normally. But, the mechanic you unlock near the end of the game that enables these puzzles involves a lot of key timing and platforming that ended up being far too twitchy for me to finish.Ultimately, because I have no 'maybe' option, I have to vote No on Gateways because of this. Perhaps if they had structured the game a little differently I could recommend it. But sadly, if any of what I mentioned seems like a red flag for you, I'd look elsewhere.
